Mode: Class/workshop based (15x workshops with additional activities such as readings, online lectures and other tasks completed on non-class days).

This qualification addresses work primarily in residential facilities under direct or regular supervision within clearly defined guidelines. You may carry out activities to maintain personal care and/or other activities of daily living for people in an aged care setting, carry out activities related to an individualised plan and report directly to a supervisor.

This Certificate III in Aged Care - Aged Care course is a popular course due to the high demand for aged care workers and the relative ease in which qualified individuals can find work in their local area.

Students wishing to enrol in the Certificate III in Aged Care - Aged Care course must be able to obtain a police clearance and be of suitable character to work in this industry. Classes for the Certificate III in Aged Care - Aged Care course begin at regular intervals throughout the year.

Warning about 6 week aged care courses

You may be tempted to enrol in a 6 week aged care course however students should be aware that organisations generally will not hire people who have completed courses in such a short period of time.   • an Australian citizen;
  • a permanent visa holder;

Under Future Skills WA:

  • There is no upper age limit.
  • There are no restrictions based on your previous level of awarded qualification; however you will need to meet any course entry requirements.

ii) A Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
iii) A Health Care Card.

Student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as student service and resource fees. Please note the requirement to complete the first aid unit for this qualification. This unit is not part of your course fee and generally is completed with an external provider.

Students may pay their course fees early or in advance however government regulation prohibits training organisations from collecting more than $1000 before training commences or $1500 in advance.

Allocated time: up to 12 months

Time to complete:Approx. 500 hours of learning and assessment activities including placement - individuals with experience or prior qualifications may complete in a shorter time. All students given up to 12 months to complete - extensions can be purchased. Average time to complete 6-9 months. See the Course Prospectus for more information regarding the course structure.

Study mode: Class/workshop based (15x workshops with additional activities such as readings, online lectures and other tasks completed on non-class days).

Placement: Minimum of 120 hours required as per the regulations - generally a single block or one/two days per week - completed towards the end of the qualification. The placement must be in a registered facility and cover dementia, high care and low care.

This qualification addresses work primarily in residential facilities within defined organisation guidelines and service plans.

These workers:

  • Carry out activities related to maintaining an individual’s well being through personal care and/or other activities of living.
  • May provide services to individuals with complex needs, and/or work with groups of older people. Work may include training and support to promote independence and community participation, which may be provided as part of activities and programs in a variety of settings including residential and centre-based programs.
  • Report to service managers and liaise with professionals and other service providers.
  • May be required to supervise and/or coordinate a limited number of other workers.

Eligibility criteria to participate in the (highlighted blue) programs and receive funding:

  • An Australian citizen, or permanent Australian resident, or a New Zealand citizen who has been a resident in Australia for more than 6 months.
  • Residing permanently in WA.
  • 15 years or older.
  • No longer attending school.
  • Receiving either New Start or Youth Allowance and have a current Health Care Card.
  • Real Institute will assess your eligibility under Participation Program prior to commencement of training.

This training is delivered under the Future Skills WA Program utilising funding from the Western Australian Government to subsidise the cost of training.

Entry Requirements

(1) To be eligible for enrolment in the Certificate IV in Aged Care, you must first have studied the following units from CHC30208 Certificate III in Aged Care (or their equivalent):

  • CHCCS411C Work effectively in the community sector

These pre-requisite requirements may be obtained prior to the commencement of this course through training programs offered at the college or through a recognition process. Each unit will incur a per unit charge.
(2) The College suggests that candidates have at least 6 months of experience relating to aged care.
